REASONS TO COME EARLY: SHOVELS & ROPE
Hold on to your hats: Shovels & Rope are playing your city very soon. Composed of married couple Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (the latter of whom did time in garage rock revival outfit The Films while Hearst was doing her solo thing), these are a couple of ultra-wise musicians who will blow you away. They hail from Charleston, SC, but often reference other integral southern towns like Pensacola, Birmingham, and Athens, GA. Part of the “Civil War Reenactment/gothic bluegrass-wave” movement, and similar-sounding to The Civil Wars, Mumford & Sons, The Head And The Heart, and The Lumineers, these guys actually live the places their songs speak of. Plus they’ll switch it up on you with Bourbon Street big band horns, Dylan harmonica, and Rolling Stones rock ‘n roll chordage. But don’t fret, there’s a heaping of soaring and harmonized bluegrass melodies that will tug at your heart (and banjo) strings. For a bluesy folk duo, these guys make a hell of a lot of sound on stage. They are simply a can’t-miss. In their words, “Hail Hail Rock and Roll.”

Performing live supporting Lucero on March 20th.
Although there is nothing wrong with the bands referenced in “…similar-sounding to The Civil Wars, Mumford & Sons, The Head And The Heart, and The Lumineers…” Shovels and Rope have their own sound and their own stories. And are a definite must see. I have been raving about them for years now.
Continue on Cary Ann and Michael.
Damn! Have I mentioned, the new Shovels and Rope album came out today. Love me some “sloppy tonk”. Just a sample above. That’s all you need. I mean listen to those pipes. Get it. Get it now.

Shovels and Rope, a great duo playing great music.
I could sell you on why you need to see and hear Michael and Cary Ann play and sing, with fancy adjectives that describe the deliciousness that these two have to offer, but by the time you get done reading this SXSW will be over. The main thing I can say is pull on your dancing boots and get down to the venue, order a beer and a shot of whiskey, and get ready to be moved.
Click on the link to find out what Shovels and Rope have to say about SXSW and for more details on what venues and parties they will be playing. Don’t be a dud and miss this group!
